One of our daughters was in JROTC while in high school. She was invited to attend a special 7-day leadership excursion at a Boy Scout Camp in Virginia. The female chaperone cancelled at the last minute, and since I was the only other mom with a large van, I was asked. Even though I am not what you might call an outdoors type of woman, I agreed.

I was not familiar with military activities, so my idea of a trip and the reality of the trip were two different things. I thought we would take two days to get to the camp. Instead, the JROTC instructors put chatty Kathy next to me to keep me alert for the 15-hour drive. I was never really sure of our destination. Since I had no cell phone or other means of communication, I just made sure that I was between the lead van and the one behind me.

As we started on the journey, I quickly realized that the red truck in front of me had much better pick-up than my large van. In order for me to stay behind him I needed to be very focused.

The trip gave me many memories that I still cherish. I reflected on how I was able to complete the journey; by looking neither to the right or the left, but keeping my eyes on the red truck; although I never knew exactly where we were going, I trusted completely that the leader knew where we were going and would get us there safely.

As I was telling someone this story, I realized that our walk with Jesus should be the same. Even when you’re not sure where you are going or how things will turn out, you can trust that Jesus will see you through and that he has your best interest at heart. Don’t look to the right or the left. Keep your eyes on Jesus and God, Himself will lead you and guide you in all the truth through the power of the Holy Spirit.
